The Winter Pickleball Challenge hosted by our athletic department was a resounding success! Led by Youth Sports Coordinator Touria Ouahid-Boren and her committee, the event brought energy and excitement to the pickleball courts as the community came together to support our student-athletes.
Held on Saturday, Jan. 11, the event quickly sold out, with 88 participants signing up to compete in this fast-growing sport. Matches took place in both the Benson Gym and the Kent-McCanner Gym, providing ample space for players of all skill levels to engage in friendly yet competitive games. Throughout the day, participants showcased teamwork, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm, while spectators enjoyed the lively atmosphere, cheering on players and connecting with fellow supporters.
Adding to the fun, participants were encouraged to dress in winter-themed outfits, bringing creativity and festive spirit to the event. Ally Balsley stood out among the crowd and was voted Best Dressed for her fun and spirited attire.
The event raised over $3,000, with all proceeds directly benefiting MSD student-athletes.
It was wonderful to see parents, teachers, staff, and community members come together to have fun for a great cause. Our athletic department hopes the Winter Pickleball Challenge will grow into an annual fundraising tradition—one that not only supports our student-athletes but also strengthens community connections through fun and engaging events.
One of the highlights of the tournament was the beautifully crafted trophies made by our high school students in the 3D Modeling class. A special thank you to Jonathan Clapp and Chester Kuschmider for guiding their students in creating these impressive awards!
A huge thank you to Touria Ouahid-Boren, Ben Coleman, Alex Simmons, and Todd Williams, and their committee, as well as the MSD Athletic Booster Club, participants, and volunteers for making this event a memorable one. Special thanks to Gallaudet Athletics for generously loaning their pickleball barriers for the event.
We look forward to seeing everyone back on the courts next year!
